Madurodam

For over 60 years, Madurodam has held the title of the smallest city in the Netherlands. It showcases all the typical features of a Dutch city, but in a miniature form that is 25 times smaller. The official opening of Madurodam took place on July 2, 1952. Since then, the city has been expanded and restored multiple times. Each time a new architectural innovation appears somewhere, a scaled-down version, reduced by 25 times, is created in Madurodam. Today, Madurodam boasts more than seven hundred structures, including windmills, bridges, trees, trains, and boats. It features palaces and canals, attractive building facades, flood protection facilities, a modern harbor, and meticulously restored office buildings. Madurodam is also home to the world’s largest miniature railway, which stretches about 4 kilometers. The Euromast

One of the tallest towers in the Netherlands can be found in Rotterdam: the Euromast. Designed by architect Maaskant, this impressive structure reaches a height of 185 meters and was built for the Floriade. Visitors can take a ride in a rotating glass elevator, which allows them to sit on a platform and gradually ascend while enjoying breathtaking views of one of the largest ports in the world, the Port of Rotterdam. On a clear day, you can even spot Antwerp in Belgium, located 80 kilometers away.
While the Euromast is not the tallest tower in the Netherlands, that title belongs to the radio tower near Lopik, which stands at an impressive 361 meters.
A ticket to the Euromast grants access to the elevator that takes you up to 185 meters, as well as to a restaurant located at 100 meters. Here, you can savor breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Thereโ€™s also the option to glide down on a zip line from the Euromast or try rappelling down the exterior wall of the building.

Kinderdijk Windmills

Kinderdijk is a must-visit destination during your trip to the Netherlands. This charming village is renowned for having the largest concentration of historic windmills in the world, which is why it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The picturesque view of the 18th-century windmills lined up against each other attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. These windmills were built to manage the low-lying land of the Alblasserwaard region, maintaining water levels in the polders and directing excess water to the Lek River. There are about 19 operational windmills in the area, serving as a backup in case modern solutions fail. Three of these windmills have been transformed into museums for visitors: Blokweer, Nederwaard, and Overwaard. Exploring the village is free, but if you wish to enter the windmills, you’ll need to purchase a ticket. It’s worth a visit to see how the Dutch lived in the past within these iconic structures.
